Tutorial :: Simple Crocheted Cloths

Making your own cleaning cloths and dishcloths is so easy!

It's also a great way to use up yarn and try out new stitches.

Use 100% cotton for better absorbency.

Play about with different weights of yarn and different hook sizes. Use a lighter weight yarn for a more drapey feeling cloth.  Or use bulkier yarn to make thicker cloths for more scrubbing potential!

Abbreviations used [the tutorials use UK crochet terminology]
ch - chain
htr - half treble crochet
BLO - back loop only
dc - double crochet
sl st - slip stitch
BPtr - back post treble
FPtr - front post treble

I used Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK and a 4mm hook.  The three cloths I made measure roughly 6 by 6 inches and 60 grams of yarn was enough for all three.  You can of course make them as big as you like - just increase the chains at the start.

Ribbed Cloth

Ch 30

Row 1: 1htr in 2nd ch from hook and in each chain to end, turn.

Row 2: Ch2, 1htr into next htr going into the back loop only [BLO], continue to end of row, turn.

Keep repeating Row 2 until you have made a square.

To make the edging: Ch1, dc in every stitch and all the way around the square evenly spacing the stitches down the sides and working 3dc in each corner.

Keep repeating Row 2 until you have made a square.
