seablanket

Seablanket is complete.  Three months of slow crochet.  

 My intention was to use the colour palette of the coast, just a short walk from here.  This blanket is how I see the seaside.  Blue skies // grey skies // darker grey skies // green seaweed // blue sea // green sea // brown pebbles // beige sand.

I am surprised by how much blue there is now that it is finished - that wasn't my intention. I claim to dislike blue but I'm not sure that's true anymore.

I wanted this space to be an honest document of my creativity – I didn't ever want to post something for the sake of it.  And in real life, sometimes there are periods when not a lot of making or artfulness is happening. 

And that's OK.  There hasn't been much studio time, so there hasn't been much to show.  I'm hoping that will change soon but until then I've been slowly working on a blanket.  It's the perfect project to pick up and crochet little bits here and there.  I'm calling it Seablanket and it is inspired by the colours of a grey day at the seaside.

I have stepped away from this space for the duration of August - it wasn't a planned break but it did coincide with The August Break.  And so in place of anything more current; some snippets from that month long photo challenge.

  

quilt planning :: colour

Colour is important to me.   I often have colours in mind before anything else falls into place. 

I knew what colours I wanted the quilt to be months ago – I saw some illustrations of birds that had a similar palette of three main colours.  A bit of yellow, some grey, a patch of brown here and there.  I decided then that this quilt would be those colours.

The yellow I want is contradictory: bright but muted.   Lemon but a bit gold.  Sunny but cloudy.  The grey I'm looking for is a cool grey but not too cold.  Feathery.  Pebbly.  And I want a brown that draws the other colours together.  But doesn't overshadow them.  

I've been playing with my Pantone postcards to assist my colour research - I'm not sure how I ever coped before I had them.  So much fun.

There hasn't been much studio activity this week.  But I have been enjoying the contradiction of muted, neutral yarns and bright, bold Pantone yellows.

looking for blues

This week I have been pondering over choices of thread colour.  I love this part of the making process - I could [and sometimes do] sit and think about colours for hours.  

There are colours that I am drawn to constantly.  Colours that I feel comfortable with and familiar around.

And there are colours that I never seem to use that much.  Blue, for instance.

 

But today I find myself stitching in blues, lots of blue.  A wall of blue.  And I like the challenge.

My resolution/pledge/aim for this year is to make a quilt. And at two and a half months into the year there has been some designing, lots of procrastinating and some gathering of fabrics. But no actual sewing of quilts.

 

But as a practice run I have been making some cushions with quilted fronts.  I'm using orangey/yellows - I am often drawn to these colours in fabrics.

It is a small project but it's a start and makes me want to make a whole quilt even more!

always the colours

I have been thinking about colour a lot lately; spring always does this to me.  Nature suddenly puts all these tones and shades right in front of my eyes.

I have an idea; a project in mind. It might stay in mind for now but it is simmering away for another moment when I can give it the full attention it needs.

But it might involve petals.
